Funding Your Shelter or Organization: Donations, Grants, and Sponsorship

Funding your shelter or association

Food, veterinary care, sterilization, facility maintenance: a shelter is expensive, continuously. Diversifying funding sources is not a luxury, it's a condition for survival. Here are the levers to activate, starting with the most powerful: tax-deductible donations.

Donations and tax deductions

If your association is recognized as being of general interest, a donation entitles the donor to a tax reduction of 66% of the amount donated, up to 20% of their taxable income (the excess being reportable over 5 years). This is your best argument: a donation costs much less than it seems.

Donor's donation Actual cost after reduction
€50 €17
€100 €34
€200 €68

To benefit from this, you must provide a tax receipt (CERFA n°11580). Good news: in-kind donations (food, care equipment, provision of premises) and expenses incurred by volunteers who waive their reimbursement are also eligible.

⚠ To check before issuing a receiptOnly issue tax receipts if your association meets the conditions for general interest. If in doubt, secure your situation with a tax ruling: issuing receipts incorrectly may lead to penalties.

Public subsidies

Municipalities, departments, regions, and sometimes the State support associations through grants or calls for projects. To maximize your chances: a clear application, a serious provisional budget, measurable objectives, and a review of past actions. Agreements with the municipal pound can also be a stable resource.

Corporate sponsorship

Companies that support your association benefit from a tax reduction of 60% for sponsorship (within legal limits). This is a powerful and underutilized lever: pet stores, veterinary clinics, and local businesses can become partners, in cash or in kind.

Memberships, collections, and events

  • Memberships: a base of regular, valuable, and loyal members;
  • Collections (food, equipment) in partnership with pet stores or shops;
  • Events: flea markets, solidarity sales, open days, which both fund and raise awareness;
  • Online donation platforms and targeted fundraisers (care for a specific animal);
  • Legacies and donations, for associations authorized to receive them.

Diversify to endure

An association that depends on a single source of funding is fragile: a grant not renewed, and everything falters. The golden rule is diversification: regular donations, subsidies, corporate sponsorship, events, and collections complement each other and give you the visibility necessary to plan for the future.

Truffeo's TipCommunicate the concrete impact of a donation: "€34 after reduction is a vaccine" speaks much more than a generic appeal for generosity. Donors want to know what their money changes, and the actual cost after tax deduction makes the gesture easy.

Tax rates and ceilings change annually (finance law). Check the amounts in force on impots.gouv.fr and Service-Public.fr, or with an accountant. This article is for informational purposes.
